Acne treatment What are the best?

Oral medication options to treat stubborn or severe acne

Acne can be difficult to treat. If you have tried several topical acne medications without many improvements, or if your acne is severe, oral acne medications are the next step of treatment. Are oral acne medications a good option?

Oral medications can be the best option for the treatment of acne since not all types of acne are cleared with topical medications (creams, lotions, and gels that are applied to the skin).Acne treatment

Oral medications, also called systemic medications, work internally to improve the skin. They are taken by mouth. There are some medications that you will take only once a day, while others will take them more often, ideally at the same time every day.

Persistent or severe cases of acne are difficult to control and, in most cases, require oral medications. Severe acne (sometimes called cystic acne or nodular acne) creates large, deep, and inflamed rashes and, usually, topical medications cannot be deep enough to effectively treat these types of imperfections.

Another problem: acne often occurs in other areas of the body, such as the back or shoulders. It can be difficult to reach those areas to effectively apply topical treatments.

Oral acne medications, on the other hand, can work on deeply inflamed imperfections and you do not need to be a contortionist to get the medication where you need it.

If you have tried topical treatments and your skin is still not improving, oral medications can give your treatment the boost it needs so you can see real results.

In any case, if you have problems controlling acne, consult a dermatologist. All oral acne medications are only prescription medications.

Oral antibiotics

Oral antibiotics have been used to treat acne for many years. Like topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics work by reducing Propionibacterium acnes (the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts). They also help to decrease inflammation of the skin.

Most people start their treatment with a high dose and switch to lower doses when acne improves. Oral antibiotics are used to treat moderate or severe acne or persistent acne.

The most common oral antibiotics prescribed for acne treatments are:

  1. Erythromycin
  2. Tetracycline
  3. Minocycline
  4. Doxycycline

Oral antibiotics work best when combined with topical acne treatments, so topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or another topical treatment is also expected to be prescribed.

In the best case, you will use oral antibiotics for the shortest time possible. Once your acne is under control, you will stop using antibiotics but will continue to treat your acne with topical medications.

Oral contraceptives

Oral contraceptives, also known as birth control pills, can be used to treat acne in women. Contraceptives work to reduce the secretions of the oil glands by suppressing the androgen hormones.

They are a good option for women with acne that comes and goes along with their monthly cycle, and for ladies with acne who need a form of control in their relationships.

Most likely, you will also need a topical medication to use along with your oral contraceptives.

Only a handful of contraceptive pills have been approved as treatments for acne by the FDA, such as Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Beyaz, and Yaz. However, you do not necessarily need these specific marks.

Contraceptive pills have been prescribed off the label to treat acne for many years. Most doctors agree that almost any formulation will have the same effect.

If contraceptive pills are not working for your hormonal acne outbreaks, spironolactone could.

Spironolactone is not a first-line treatment option, and it is not a treatment for the typical acne vulgaris.

Instead, spironolactone is prescribed for women whose acne is caused by an underlying hormonal imbalance.

As such, spironolactone is not a treatment option for men, adolescents or pre-adolescents.

Isotretinoin, which was previously sold under the name Accutane, is a super potent medication for acne. It works when all the other acne treatments have failed, and it is considered the best treatment for severe acne.

Isotretinoin acts by reducing the sebaceous glands, reducing the amount of oil found in the skin. This, in turn, reduces the amount of comedones (or pore blocks) produced. No blockage of pores is equal to any a pimple.

However, this medication is not for everyone. For example, pregnant women cannot use this drug because it can cause serious birth defects.

Your dermatologist will help you decide if this is the right medication for you.
