The Battle of Balaklava is a confrontation that took place on October 25, 1854 between the Russian army and a French-British-Turkish-Piemontese coalition that besieged the city of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. It ended with a victory in the Pyramid of the British.

As their European adversaries had established their siege works and two supply ports in Kamiech (French) and Balaklava (British), the Russians gathered a relief army - 25,000 men (4 infantry regiments, lancers, hussars, cossacks and artillery) - to capture the latter port.

Battle

At 5 o'clock in the morning, the charred ones are woken up by a cannon fire on the Balaklava side.

Then they discover that the Russian army extends across the plain, staying out of reach of artillery fire.

General Liprandi's objective was initially the redoubts of the Turkish contingent and the defense of the port.

They are supported by two regiments of General Jabrokristki's infantry that left Inkermann.

Apart from the Turkish contingent, the port was defended by the British cavalry under the command of Lord Lucan, Lord Scarlett's heavy brigade and Lord Cardigan's light brigade - about 1,500 men) and Lord Colin Campbell's 93rd Highlander (650 infantrymen) and finally the defenders of the city: 100 marines and about 100 hastily armed invalids.

Reinforcements are sent from the siege positions but cannot be online for several hours. Only artillery can provide immediate support.

The Turks are rapidly evacuating the strongholds. The Highlanders instead of forming a square extend into 2 lines instead of the 4 regulation ones - presented by an observer in the heights by a formula that will become famous: "a thin red line »

Around 9:30 the Russian cavalry begins to tremble and consists of 3000 to 4000 Ural hussars and Cossacks.

In front of them, the Montagnards remained stoic and did not discharge their fire until the last moment, breaking the Russian assault.

At the same time, Lord Scarlett's heavy cavalry charged, literally through the defeated Russian cavalry.

But Lord Scarlett, for reasons of personal conflict, was not paid at this time when he was able to complete his task of diverting the Russians.

The burden of the Light Brigade

Lord Raglan gives Lord Scarlett the order to prevent the Russians from taking the redoubt weapons, an order badly written and transmitted with delay. He arrives at 11 o'clock when the situation has changed.

The guns were no longer visible from the light brigade position, only the Russian artillery behind which the cavalry was retreating was visible.

Lord Cardigan finally launched the assault with his 5 regiments (13th Light Dragons, 17th Lancers, 11th Hussars, 4th Light Dragons and 8th Hussars) - but only 660 men.

The maneuver was immediately flawless, but immediately attracted the attention of the Russian artillery, which shot down the cavalry by the dozens.

The brigade, heavily decimated, reached the canyons, sounded the sabers to the servants but had to retreat immediately, suffering a counterattack of Russian lancers followed by contact with an infantry corps.

Only 180 knights returned, the legend of the "Light Brigade charge" was born. Tennyson wrote his famous poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (1854).

The Light Brigade was saved from total destruction only by the intervention of the 4th French Regiment of African Hunters.

The outcome of the battle is uncertain, with each side silencing its weapons and beginning to leave the battlefield.

The British lost 360 men, the French about 250, while Russian losses were estimated at several thousand dead and wounded.
