Create a good e-book in 10 steps

I recommend you follow this order instead of focusing first on the most typical of first index, title and cover design.

How to create a good e-book in 10 steps

.

Define the basics to create an e-book

  • Why you want to make an e-book
  • What are you going to talk about, this is the most important thing, this will depend on the success of your e-book
  • To whom is the e-book addressed?
  • What other e-books exist for the topic you have selected
  1. Defines a boot scheme

  2. Raise the scheme of your content, what works best for e-books
    • Introduction
    • Problem (topic)
    • Solution (this is where most of your content will be)
    • Tools
    • Recommendations
    • Sources
  3. Create an initial index as a result of the scheme (initial because you know how it will start but not how it will end)
  1. Plan your times

If you make an e-book without time, two things can happen to you:

  • Your contents rust because new things will have come out when you're done.
  • You'll last much longer than if you set limits.

That is why my recommendation is that you make a planning that includes at least the following:

  • Date to write half of the e-book
  • Deadline for editing and making changes to the final e-book result
  • Date to prepare cover design
  • Deadline for publication

If you want to move faster you will have to do a lot of research before you start writing and when you start writing you will have to do even more research to confirm that everything you share is 100% true. Some recommendations for this would be:

  • Subscribe to related blogs
  • Reads related books
  • Read books that can be competition
  • Search for references that add value to your e-book

This is when the best part arrives, that of starting to translate your acquired knowledge with your profession and your research. My recommendation for this part is never forget:

  • Your deadlines
  • Putting Distractions to One Side
  • Add visual content every 6-8 paragraphs
  • Confirm what you write if you have doubts
  • Be decisive with what you write
  • Believing in what you share
  1. Finish your e-book and ask for an opinion

Use colleagues and referrals to take a look at your e-book and give you their respective feedbacks.

The finishing part of the e-book includes:

  • Spell check
  • Review of disaggregated topics
  • Revision of the final index
  1. Complete the other parts of an e-book

When your content is perfect it's your turn to check out other parts of the e-book such as:

  • Introduction
  • Conclusions
  • Biography
  • Recommended links
  • Commercial Info

This is when the challenge comes to visually summarize the content of your book, there are people who do not get complicated and simply use a good typography and a good background. Whichever form you use, you will have to include the following data here (as a minimum):

  • Title
  • Brief description
  • Author
  • Company (if applicable)
  1. Launch your e-book

  2. I save for another post the promotion plan for an e-book but I use this to recommend some actions:
  • Create a post or landing page to offer the free book
  • Defines the mechanics for downloading the book
  • Send a newsletter to your subscribers
  • Publish the e-book in RRSS
  • Create a banner
  1. Analyze the success of your e-book

  2. From the moment you launch your e-book you will have to monitor the effectiveness of all the actions and above all the number of downloads.

The beginnings are usually good, so you will have many downloads at the beginning, when this descends you will have to implement new techniques to reactivate your downloads. The most common data to trackear are:

  • Number of downloads
  • Number of visits to the page where the e-book is located
  • Number of downloads vs. number of visits
  • The virality of the e-book in RRSS (Social Share)
  • Positive comments from the e-book.

Tools to create eBooks

  1. NeoBook

  2. It is an application to create interactive books quickly as well as tutorials, presentations and all kinds of documents by dragging and dropping. It also allows you to import images and files created with traditional word processors to shorten working times.

The tool works with Windows, is intuitive in every sense and super complete in functions. It can be downloaded for free from its official site.

  1. 7Write

It is another of the programs to create free eBooks eBooks that I recommend you for its simplicity and because it will accompany you in each of the stages of your project until its publication in the most popular online stores (Amazon, Google Play and Scribd).

It works as a guide for making books and is presented with a clear interface from where you can write and receive suggestions to add characters, scenarios, an eye-catching plot and round a great story among other things. It also includes the typical functions of a text editor.

At the moment it is in beta phase and requires an email address to access a test.

  1. iBooks Author

It is a program for Mac OS X and iOS users with which you can create books to read on iPad in full quality and in all the categories you can think of.

Among other things you can choose from multiple template designs, insert interactive widgets to enhance the reader's experience with photo galleries and videos, choose text styles of the most diverse and so on.

Documents created with iBooks Author can only be uploaded to the Apple iBook Store when their output format is .iBooks.

If you use a Mac or have an iPhone or iPad do not hesitate to try this tool that will let you know your skills as a writer.

  1. Bubok

Allows you to create and design eBooks through an online editor that has all the functions necessary to list a publication.

The publication can be done directly on the platform offered by Bubok publicly or privately and reach with your writings a large community of readers.

Its simplicity in the management and the quality of the results that you can obtain by creating a book stands out. The project has been sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

The platform has a catalogue of more than 70,000 books published and is integrated to Google Books and Amazon among other stores with presence in several countries.

  1. ByeInk

It is a simple tool that will allow you to create professional eBooks easily and respecting each of the stages of the process.

With ByeInk you will be able to create, edit, layout and distribute your works obtaining a high quality, professional and attractive aspect for the potential readers of your works.

The tool hosts the contents in the cloud and unlike the previous ones requires a minimum maintenance payment that is worth facing if we take into account the cost-benefit ratio.

As if it were not enough once you have published your book you will be able to sell it with the options offered by the platform and without having to pay commissions for sale.

It also has statistics and reports for you to see the evolution of your work.

  1. Papyrus

It is a platform to make digital books from the Internet that also meets the premises of simplicity and speed in the creation of your works. The service offered by Papyrus is totally free and allows you to choose between multiple formats.

The formats in which you can create eBooks are compatible with the Amazon Kindle (MOBI), EPUB and PDF. The service is one of the best if you are new to the art of writing and publishing because it has a basic editor, a tool to design the cover of the book, can import content from the Internet to convert them and even publish the work for a profit.

He publishes on GumRoad. Personally I'm about to use it to convert some sites into eBooks, as it only takes a few minutes to achieve and is a good way to distribute the content that one has been writing for some years.

  1. MoglueBuilder

Compatible with Windows and Mac OS X is a tool perhaps less powerful than those mentioned above but that can not be missing in the list for some qualities that are worthwhile.

MoglueBuilder is perfect for the creation of interactive books and seems to me one of the best alternatives if you are an educator of courses with children.

To achieve works that offer great interactivity and therefore are entertaining, it allows importing images and sounds with just a couple of clicks, offering simple, beautiful and visually attractive results.

The application is also available on iOS and Android for those who want to operate from their mobile phones.

  1. Baker Ebook Framework

It is a framework in HTML5 to create and publish books on iPhone or iPad following some steps that require some extra knowledge. The results you can get with this framework are spectacular and mainly when viewed from an iPad.

In addition to HTML5 it supports JavaScript and CSS. The tool is free for personal or commercial use.

  1. LibreOffice Writer

The famous and efficient open source word processor allows you to create documents in EPUB format through an extension (Writer2ePub). The documents must be written with the program belonging to the LibreOffice suite and a single click will be necessary to perform the conversion.

This is a particularly useful option for those who already use the processor and want to convert their writings to the eBook format. This creator of EPUBS will help you share your literary projects in a very simple way.

  1. eCub

It is an open source application that offers you the possibility of creating electronic books in EPUB or MobiPocket format by importing files in HTML or text format. The great advantage I found in eCub is that the process can be monitored step by step, which saves time and eliminates errors.

It also allows you to add sound files to your eBooks through eSpeak. Other features: you can create book covers, edit XHTML files with an integrated editor and even use it in portable mode among other interesting things.

  1. Myebook

It's another great option for making interactive books that can then be marketed. The eBooks can include videos, flash content, sounds, photos and everything else you can think of from multiple resources, including YouTube, so that the reader is surprised or impacted.

The sale of the books can take place from the Myebook platform that will charge you a 10% commission for each sale (which is nothing seeing the advantages it offers you).
