• Atherosclerosis: this pathology affects the internal lining of the arteries and can lead to a heart attack, stroke or arteritis of the lower limbs.
• Alteration of the micro-vessels: they are the cause of retinopathies, damage to the retina that leads to visual deficiencies and even blindness, peripheral neuropathies, renal failure, liver diseases and healing disorders.
• neurodegeneration: characterized by damage or loss of neurons. This pathology, therefore, hinders the proper functioning of the brain.

Type 2 diabetes: how is it diagnosed?

Patients with diabetes rarely have clinical manifestations. This makes diagnosis difficult. To detect this disease, the patient's fasting blood glucose level is measured (usually in the morning). There are three possible outcomes:

• 1 g/l: blood sugar is normal and diabetes is undetected
• Between 1.10 and 1.26 g/l: the patient is considered to be pre-diabetic.
• 1, 27 g/l or more: diabetes is declared

To confirm the diagnosis, other indicators such as post-prandial glucose, induced glucose and glycated hemoglobin levels are evaluated.

What are the treatments for type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is treatable, but there is no cure. A healthy lifestyle limits the risk of serious complications. Weight loss when needed, regular physical activity and a balanced diet help control blood sugar levels.

In addition to good hygienic and dietary measures, oral or injectable anti-diabetic treatments can reduce the effects. When insulin deficiencies become too severe, patients are offered insulin injections.
