More than 204 million e-mails are sent every minute, making e-mail one of the most widely used services on the Internet.
But every time we send an email we can’t really know if it has been read unless the person who received it responds to us, something that can be desperate if we’re waiting for an answer to something very important.
If you need to be sure that your email has been read, there are several services that will let you know if someone received and opened the email you sent them.
We tell you about three alternatives that do just that, and even a little more.
To warn you, it will display a couple of check marks to the left of each e-mail that has been read, similar to those in Whatsapp, although unlike the messaging client that displays them when the message has arrived, MailTrack will display them when the e-mail has been opened and read.
If you hover your mouse over the double-check of an email, you will see that it will also show you some extra information, such as the time it was opened, the location if available, and the device or browser used. These data are not always accurate, but the fact that the mail was opened yes.
1: Install MailTrack
MailTrack is a free extension for Google Chrome that lets you know if your email has been read.
It works in a similar way to Whatsapp ticks, but in your Gmail mail.
To get started, visit their website and click on ‘Add MailTrack to your Gmail’.
A new tab will open with information about what the plug-in will do in your browser. Click on “Accept”.
You’ll then need to sign in to your Gmail account and accept the permissions.
Once you’re logged in, you’ll be prompted to update Gmail permissions.
Click “Allow” to continue.
2: Send your first e-mail
How to know if you have read an email is very simple, send an email from Gmail as you would normally do (with the plugin already installed, of course).
Once you have clicked on “Send”, MailTrack will start tracking your mail.
Be sure to delete the signature on the end if you don’t want the sender to know you’re using this service.
3: Knows the different symbols
If we access the “Sent” folder we can see the different symbols used by the program and know what each one of them means.
A single tick will mean that the last e-mail sent has not been opened by the recipient.
The double tick will indicate that the e-mail has been opened and in which browser or device and how long ago.
However, it should be noted that you can not always tell if your e-mail has been opened. Why? Because the e-mail tracking system works with hidden images.
This means that if the recipient uses a mobile application, for example, that asks for confirmation to show the images and does not click, you will not know if he has read it.
This is true, for example, for the mobile application for Hotmail, but Gmail always works, whether it’s an application or a browser, because Gmail doesn’t ask for confirmation.
If an “X” appears next to the e-mail, it means that it has not been sent with MailTrack, and therefore, it is not possible to track it or know if you have read our e-mail.
4: Find out how many times they have read the mail
To know how many times they have read your email, you must access the Dashboard de MailTrack.
You will be able to see how many times they have opened your e-mail, if they have opened a link that you have provided and the date on which the e-mail was first sent.
In the MailTrack dashboard you can place the cursor over the number of times it has been opened to get more details.
Yesware is another good option to know if your emails were read but it is much more complete than the previous one.
It has been done in order to be a tool for sellers so that they can increase the sales of their products through email.
This application works in Chrome and will not only track e-mails, but will also give you reminders, reports, tracking attachments, creating work teams, among other things.
You can pay as little as $10 a month for the service, or install it without any subscription, which will give you information and tracking for 100 emails a month.
If you want to track only a few e-mails so as not to waste those 100 events, you can decide whether or not you want to track each e-mail with Yesware when you send it to its recipient.
Bananatag is another option very similar to the previous one, with the possibility of having a more complete service, with reports, notifications, tracking e-mails as a team, and payment plans or free.
In addition, this tool adds two important things: tracking using Microsoft Outlook and any other mail client -including mobile ones- by adding a suffix to the recipient’s email address in that message you want to track.
Bananatag’s plans are also cheaper paying just US$5 a month, although you can also leave the free option that limits the number of emails tracked to five a day.
The email application of the Microsoft Office suite, Outlook, allows the user to know if an email that has been sent has been received. In addition, it allows to know if the recipient has read our mail. To do this, just follow a few simple steps and tick a few boxes.
First of all, open Outlook.
Once inside the program, go to the ‘Tools’ section and click on ‘Options’. It’s your turn to click on ‘Mail Options’.
To be successful in our mission we must now click with the mouse on ‘Tracking Options.
Finally, check the boxes ‘Reading confirmation’ and ‘Delivery confirmation’. There you go. Now you will know who receives your e-mails and, most importantly, who reads them.
