How to compress a file, step by step

Files compressed in .zip or .rar, are files that generally contain more files inside, which are used to facilitate tasks such as sending various attachments by email. A file is also compressed to reduce its size or weight.

For example, if you have a long-lasting video or audio file, you probably have a pretty large amount of megabytes.

To be able to share it by mail, you’ll need to reduce its size, which is precisely where some interesting tools come into play.

Occasionally, you may also need to compress files from a folder, especially to avoid the task of uploading file by file to a certain server or to send by email.

For this, there are programs such as WinZip or WinRAR, which work with extensions .zip and .rar, respectively.

However, Windows in its most recent versions has also added a compressor of its own, so you no longer need to use other types of programs.

But if you need more complex functionalities to compress your files, you can download the above mentioned programs.

Although it is also necessary to clarify that in order to work with files compressed in .rar, it will be necessary to use the WinRAR program to decompress them, since by default Windows cannot do it by itself, as it happens with WinZip files.

How to compress a file

First you must go to the location where the file or files you want to compress are located.

Then you can select the file, although if you need to use two or more files, you can use the Ctrl key + click on that file. Then you will need to right click on the selected file, where you will see a drop-down menu with the option Send to > Folder compressed in Zip.

Next you will see a window with the progress of the compression.

At the same time, a file will appear in .zip format and with a closed folder icon that also takes the name of the first file you have selected and gives you the option to rename it.

Also, this file takes up less space than all uncompressed files.

How to decompress a file

If you want to decompress a file through the same Windows tool, you just have to go to the place where it is stored, then you can right click and select the Extract all option.

Next, a new window will appear in which you need to choose the place inside the hard disk where you want to store the already decompressed files. To do this, you can click on the Browse button.

Now you can navigate through the folders contained on the hard disk to select where the compressed files will be extracted. Then you can click on the OK button.

If you have selected the location, you can proceed to click the Extract button in the initial window. Immediately, you will be able to observe a small window with the progress of the extraction.

At the end of the process, the new folder containing the already unzipped files will be opened automatically.

Now all that’s left is for you to start performing these kinds of tasks with any kind of your own files you want, whether it’s your favorite movies or songs, important documents from your work, among others.
