Oregano is one of the most widely used aromatic herbs in our cuisine. A condiment that we can take advantage of for infinity of recipes so that if you wish that you never lack, nothing like following the guide of steps next in which we explained to you, how to dry the oregano in house.
Growing oregano at home is simple, but to be able to use it in the kitchen, it is better that it is dry and so pour it over any recipe such as pasta.
This way you can take some of the fresh oregano you have planted in your garden or on the terrace or balcony and dry it and then take advantage of all its aroma and taste when you need it.
Steps to drying oregano at home
In order to dry the oregano well, it is best to have a few sprigs of fresh oregano when it has just bloomed.
Cut the branches flush with the ground or in the middle of the stem and tie them with a little thread.
Hang the branches upside down in a cool, dark place. If you don’t have a dark place, you can wrap the oregano twigs with newspaper leaves.
Depending on the area in which you live, oregano may dry out in days or even weeks. To shorten the time, it will be good to choose an area with low humidity and good ventilation.
When you see that the oregano leaves have dried, cut them and place them in an airtight glass jar. Dried oregano, thus prepared, can be preserved for about a year.
If you want to dry the oregano in the sun, you will not need to hang the branches upside down. All you’ll need is a tight mesh (or mosquito net) to stretch out in the sun.
Extend the twigs in the net, separating them well from each other. You must be careful to turn the oregano when the sun sets. This drying method, however, is not recommended if you live in a very humid area. Also in this case, after drying, the oregano leaves should be cut and stored in jars with an airtight seal.
With these two methods you will be able to get dry oregano easily although it will be good that you know that to take advantage of the properties and the aroma of the oregano, it is advisable to collect the branches in flower.
What you have to do is collect the branches to dry them right after flowering, but before the seeds ripen. For better orientation we can say that oregano flowers in late spring will be the best choice for those who want to dry oregano in the sun or hung upside down.
