Choosing the right time to apply for a small business raise
Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to wait until the end of the year to increase your compensation.

Why does that phrase kill?
Because this is simply blackmail, a weapon to be used with great care. A direct threat may work, but it will only work once, because in all likelihood the manager now knows that this blackmail can be repeated.
Your only line of defense is to make the employee in question replaceable as quickly as possible to get out of the blackmail, and then the threats will no longer have any effect.
Not to mention that the message sent "I'd like to be somewhere else" doesn't usually fall on deaf ears: why invest more in an employee who explicitly tells you that your future is elsewhere? "Therefore, there is a high probability that the manager will call your bluff and instantly refuse.
In the end, the candidate will not have received his salary increase, but will have considerably degraded his image with his manager, appearing from now on as an "outgoing" employee.
"I've peaked this year, so I need a raise."
Why does that phrase kill?
Because it is not up to you to evaluate yourself but to your manager. "With this type of sentence, the employee catches himself showing that he is reaching his own limits and therefore reduces the desire to give him a raise because it seems that he has already given everything," he argues.
"I'm as experienced as so-and-so who just got a raise, so I'm entitled to a raise too.
Why does that phrase kill?
Because this statement contains a double problem. First, except in the public administration, increases in seniority are still extremely rare.
And second, the second problem is that it is difficult to compare yourself with others. "In our company, there are in fact new employees who are promoted quickly because their results and attitude are remarkable.
On the other hand, those who fall asleep and/or purr will not be rewarded. This is true regardless of how long they have been with us. The meritocracy is in order.

Why does that phrase kill?
Because it's actually self-growing and employers don't appreciate it. In fact, if you don't get a raise, you're going to work less. So mathematically to increase your hourly rate.
This type of sentence further encourages managers not to invest in the employee. And so you find yourself in a vicious circle where you are not one of the clearly identified people and therefore your chances of seeing your pay rise decrease. The solution? Self-increase, but discreetly and in moderation.
