How to make a free logo
A Logo, more commonly called Logo, is much more than a simple graphic sign with which a company is identified …
is the way we have to differentiate ourselves from our competition and arises from the need to identify the products or services we provide.
Without going any further, when we see the Ferrari logo, we are not just seeing a brand of cars… but we see high-end sports cars, with a lot of prestige and history and perhaps even many of us begin to imagine situations driving one of them.
What types of Logos exist
First of all, we will look at the different types of logos that exist, so that you can see which one is the most suitable for your company.
- Logo: those that are made only by text.
- Isologo: those who only use images.
- Isologotype: those who mix text with images.
On the other hand, within the groups that include images (isologo and isologotype), we will find a second classification:
Figurative: those represented by recognizable images of reality.
Abstract: those that do not represent recognizable figures of reality. In many cases they are made up of geometric shapes.
Characteristics that a Logo must have to be successful
For your logo to be successful, it must comply with the following characteristics:
1) Simplicity first of all
Many times we blind ourselves thinking that our logo has to be shocking at first sight, which leads to extravagant designs and too much sought after, either by the format or the colors that compose it.
It will probably call the attention of all the people who see it for the first time and even arouse a certain curiosity in them, the problem is that they hardly remember it, due to its complexity… and if there is one thing that ALL successful logos have in common is that they are easily recognizable and memorable.
A clear example of a successful and extremely simple logo is that of Nike.
Tips for making a logo simple:
– Use as few colors as possible.
– The typography should be easy to read.
– Create designs that are simple and easy to understand.
2) It is FUNDAMENTAL that it is adaptable to different formats and designs.
Secondly, we must think that the logo will be found in many places and most of them all different:
- The company’s website
- In Email Marketing mailings
- Different types of advertisements (AdWords, Facebook Ads, etc.)
- Personal Cards
- Newspapers and magazines, etc.
For this reason it is essential that your design can be readapted to different formats.
Tips to make your design adaptable to different formats:
– Design your logo so that it can be seen both horizontally and vertically. –
Make it vectorial: this is what will make you be able to modify the size of it without losing quality or the image is pixelated.
3) Must be appropriate
As obvious as it may seem, it is important to say it, a successful logo must be appropriate. And by this I mean that it should not lend itself to misinterpretations or double meanings.
If you still don’t understand what I mean, look at the logo of this U.S. pediatric children’s center and you’ll understand…
Needless to say, they’ve already changed it…
Tips to NOT have this happen to you:
– See that the design does not lend itself to misinterpretations: once finished show it to different people, they may see things that you did not perceive.
– Think of the Ideal Client of your company or business
4) Make it unique
Having hundreds of thousands of companies all over the world, and therefore hundreds of thousands of logos, it is very probable that some of the ideas, images or phrases that you are going to come up with already exist or have been used before.
In that case, you don’t need to completely change your idea, but you can customize it to make it unique… a clear example of this is Apple and its apple with a bite.
Tips to make your logo unique:
– Use original images and phrases, which are not very hackneyed. –
If you use a figurative image, be sure to give it a distinctive touch, something that will set it apart from the rest.
Step by Step to create your company’s Logo
Immerse yourself in your company: What do I want to transmit?
The first step when it comes to designing the right Logo for your brand, is to make a study of your own company, so you know what it has to transmit, and for that, nothing better than asking yourself some questions:
a) Why do you want to design this logo? What did you think about when you decided to create a logo?
b) What are your ideal clients like? Thinking about them… What should the logo look like? (formal, informal, serious, funny, academic, etc.).
c) What do you consider to be the 3 most important attributes of your company?
(Mention 3 attributes, highest to lowest).
d) What kind of phrases or images could reflect these attributes?
e) What competitive advantage does your company have over those of the closest competitor? (mention the name of the competing company)
f) Do you have an inclination or preference for certain colors? If yes, is it instinctive or is it due to a particular reason?
As you may have noticed, what we achieve with this is to narrow the field of possible designs for your logo.
In the beginning, one tends to go crazy, because as it has no parameter, EVERYTHING could be part of it… so it becomes impossible to think and get ideas, and end up coming up with totally nonsensical and meaningless things.
On the other hand, once you have answered these questions, you will know what the purpose of the logo is…
Why are you designing it, what it should look like (it is not the same to design a logo for a college or university, as it is for an oil company), what are the attributes that the logo should reflect (including your advantages over the competition), what images and phrases would make it possible, and the colors that would be more appropriate.
Rain or brainstorming
As I mentioned earlier, once you’ve answered the above questions, you’ll have a closer idea of where your logo needs to point, so it’s time to go to step two.
Here the idea will be to write them all down, and by this I mean EVERY AND EVERY idea you will come up with for the logo design. Of course, they must meet all or at least most of the requirements listed in point 1.
Once you’ve done it (I recommend you take a few days to think, the ideas will come little by little, do not think it is something that will come out in a couple of hours) you will have to select the ones that best suit your needs.
The ideal would be to take only one ideal, and then work fully on it, could become two, but more of that I do not recommend it.
Sketches… Let’s draw!
With the idea(s) in my head, it’s time to grab pencil and paper and draw them. I know… You can’t draw!
Well, that doesn’t matter, neither do I! Here the important thing is that you sit down and begin to draw the Logo that you imagine in your head, since this will help you to obtain new ideas and to perfect the previous ones, and beyond the cute or ugly that can be seen in the paper, in your mind it will look great.
