How to make homemade clay

Materials needed to make plasticine

Since we started making our own play dough at home, we haven’t gone back. The recipe is very easy and you only need oil, salt, flour, water and food colorants.

Very easy recipe to make clay at home. It’s only 6 steps and 5 ingredients.

To make plasticine you need:

Ingredients

  • Flour (1 cup for each color)
  • Salt (1/2 cup for each color)
  • Oil (1 tablespoon for each color)
  • Food coloring (approximately 15 drops per color)
  • Water (1 cup for each color)
  • Optional: Cream of Tartar (1 spoonful per color makes the plasticine last months stored in bags)

Other

  • A small bowl for each color (if the kids are going to help you make the play dough)
  • A spoon for each color (if the kids are going to help you make the play dough)
  • An easy-to-clean table to rig the mix
  • Sandwich bags for storage
  • A pot

Two options

  1. You are going to make the play dough without children: Then I recommend that you mix the ingredients directly in the pot so as not to dirty extra bowls.
  2. You’re going to make play dough with children: Children love to create their own materials and watch their creation change (the colored liquid turns into play dough! ). Making play dough with children will dirty more containers but you will keep the children very entertained and they will feel very proud to have helped in the process of creation.

Then we’ll make the plasticine by color.

In other words, these are the steps you must repeat for each color of plasticine you want to make.

Water + food colouring + oil

Put 1 cup of water (preferably at room temperature) in the pot or bowl and then add the color you want for food coloring. The more droplets you put, the stronger the colors will be. I recommend you to put approximately 15 drops, and never more than 30 for each color.

Finally add 1 tablespoon of oil and mix.

Once your liquid ingredients are mixed, add 1 cup flour and 1/2 cup salt.

Mix and put the plasticine on the fire

Mix the ingredients gently so that the flour does not salt and soil. Once the color is ready (well mixed) put it in the pot and cook over medium/low heat, mixing the dough until the liquid becomes hard and begins to peel away from the edges of the pot. You know that play dough is ready when it gets harder and even if you try to mix the dough it becomes a ball in the middle of the pot.

How long does plasticine cook? This is going to depend on different factors such as the type of flour you are using, but the truth is that it doesn’t take long.

Take the play dough out of the pot and knead it. this is a very entertaining step for children but remember that the dough will be hot when you take it out of the pot so children will have to wait a few minutes.

If your play dough is too sticky even if you knead it for a while (it sticks to your fingers) it’s because it needs more cooking (put it in the pot over low heat for a few extra minutes).

Follow these steps for each color of play dough you want to make.
