 Method 1. Search for and recover overwritten excel files from temporary files

Generally when editing an excel file, the Excel application will automatically create some temporary files in a specific location on your computer. Then, we can try to find the excel file overwritten from these temporary files, for this:

1.Locate the location of the temporary excel files

For Windows 7 users:

2.Change temporary files from excel to normal

Look for temporary excel files that start with “$” or “~” and end with “.TMP”, select the correct excel file by date, copy it and save it to another safe place, then change the extension from .TMP to .XLS / .XLSX. ( . DOC / .DOCX when dealing with a Word file)

Method 2. Retrieve the Excel/Word file overwritten from the previous version

  • Create a new excel file with the same name as your lost excel file;
  • 2. Right-click the excel file and select Properties;
  • 3. Go to Previous Versions, search and select the latest version before overwriting your Excel file, then click Restore.

Then you will have restored your excel file from the previous version.
