Teething problems

Whether it's a teething problem in a young child or a wisdom tooth that breaks after age 25, the pain can often be unbearable. Carole Minker, a doctor of pharmacy, gives us some natural remedies to relieve these pains.

A few drops of real lavender essential oil

The essential oil of lavender is appreciated for its healing, analgesic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

From the age of 3 months and only externally, massage the swollen and red cheeks by diluting 1 drop of lavender essential oil in an arnica hazelnut gel, 3 times a day for 3 days maximum.

To be used from 3 months.

From the cold

The cold has an anesthetic, decongestant and anti-inflammatory action on the painful area.

Place a ready-to-use cold pack (Thera Pearl Kids or Actipoche Junior) on the child's cheek, previously placed in the refrigerator. Or put some ice cubes in a plastic bag covered with a cloth (only for adults).

Leave it for about 10 minutes, and then repeat twice a day.

There are no contraindications.

A poultice with four spice leaves

The leaves of four spices have local anesthetic and antibiotic properties.

Buy the fresh leaves in an exotic or Asian store.

Mix a few leaves as they are and then place the equivalent of a teaspoon of mixture in an unfolded compress. Close the compress so that it has a rectangular shape of approximately 1 cm by 2 cm.

Place it on the sore gums and leave it for about 10 minutes, 1 to 3 times a day, for up to 2 days, until you have a dental appointment.

Remedy to be used from 15 years old, contraindicated in pregnant and lactating women.

Baking soda mouthwash

Baking soda relieves pain and speeds up healing.

Dilute 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 250 ml of hot water.

You can make 4 or 5 mouthwashes a day (keep 1 minute in your mouth before spitting). Keep the mixture in a cool place between two shots. Discard at the end of the day and redo it the next day if necessary. It will be done in 3 or 4 days, the time to go to the dentist.

There are no contraindications. Remedy for children over 6 years old.

Homeopathy against teething

It bets on the granules of Chamomilla vulgaris 15CH, Belladonna 9CH and Arnica 9CH.

Chamomilla vulgaris relieves the pain and grumpiness of a suffering child;

Belladonna is used in case of red gum inflammation accompanied by pain and fever. If the inflammation is pink, replace it with Apis mellifica, following the same dosage;

Arnica montana with anti-inflammatory action, relieves pain related to the trauma caused by the drilling of the tooth in the gum.

Dilute 10 granules of each in a little water and then pour it into a bottle. Stir to dissolve, then give the baby sips throughout the day. Keep the bottle in a cool place between meals. Discard at the end of the day and repeat the next day if necessary. Do this for as long as necessary.

In adults, place 3 granules under the tongue, 3 granules every hour, which will be spaced according to the improvement of symptoms.

No contraindications

Glycerol macerate of blackcurrant and fig shoots

The glycerol macerate of blackcurrant shoots is anti-inflammatory, while that of fig shoots is soothing and calming. These two macerations complement each other in their actions.

To be taken orally:

- From 3 months to 3 years: 1 drop from 1 to 3 times a day of the mixture. To put it in the bottle or a little water;

- 3 to 8 years old and pregnant or nursing women (the active molecules pass into the milk and soothe the nursing baby): 3 to 8 drops per day of the mixture;

- From 8 years old: 5 drops 1 to 3x/d of the mixture

Take a maximum of 4 to 5 days.

Marshmallow root for teething

The marshmallow root mucilage is softening and relieving the pain.

The marshmallow root is not recommended before 3 years because it carries a risk of asphyxiation by detachment of small pieces.

Therefore, it is recommended before this age (but not before 8 months) to buy a fruit nipple (nipple whose part that enters the mouth can be filled with fruit) and place a piece of root in it.

You can also use it as a mouthwash from the age of 6. Boil 10 g of marshmallow root in 1 liter of cold water. Count 10 minutes from boiling.

It is then removed from the fire and left to macerate overnight. The next day, filter and use pure in the mouthwash as many times as necessary (keep 1 minute in the mouth before spitting, 5-6 times a day). Keep the preparation in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

It is possible to use this remedy on pregnant and lactating women.

The nail for teething pain

Nails are known for their local anesthetic and antibacterial properties.

In case of dental thrust, it can be used in the form of essential oil.

For children 5 months and older, dilute 1 drop of clove essential oil in 10 ml of vegetable oil (olive oil for example) and then massage one drop of this mixture on the sore gums 3 times a day for no more than 3 days;

For an adult, a drop of essential oil diluted with a drop of vegetable oil on a cotton pad to be placed on the painful area and left for up to 10 minutes. It will be done 3 times a day if necessary, for 2 days at most, until you have a dental appointment.

You can also chew a nail directly on the painful area, no longer than 10 minutes and only from age 15.

Do not use these remedies during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Nigella vegetable oil

Nigella vegetable oil is an edible and medicinal oil. It is particularly anti-inflammatory.

Massage with your finger 1 to 2 pure drops into the painful gum, starting with the diversification of the diet, maximum 3 times a day for 4 to 5 days.

There are no contraindications.

Roman Chamomile Aromatic Hydrolysate

The aromatic hydrate of Roman chamomile is soothing, healing and anti-inflammatory.

Its use in the form of a hydrolysate allows it to be used from a very early age (from 1 month old).

Buy the hydrolate as is and, if it is not packaged in an aerosol bottle, add an aerosol yourself (after disinfecting the tip to prevent bacterial growth).

Spray in the child's mouth, 3 or 4 times a day, for up to one week. Keep it in the refrigerator to combine the action of the hydrosol with the cold.

There are no contraindications. To be used from the first month onwards in babies.
