What are the risk diets?

In the age group 20 to 60 years, the most common deficiencies are: iron, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin C.

Cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, cancer, high cholesterol and brain atrophy are the main diseases associated with lack of nutrients in adulthood.

According to researcher Jeffrey Blumberg, professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in the United States, it is very difficult for adults to change their eating habits, hence the importance of good education in nutrition from childhood.

Research shows that:

  • 48% of men and 61% of women have inadequate calcium intake.
  • 4% of men and 12% of women are iron deficient
  • 2% of women have an insufficient intake of vitamin A.

The main deficiencies found in adults

Vitamin A deficiency

Vitamin A deficiency, called hypovitamin A deficiency, affects vision and can cause irreversible blindness. In addition to compromising a child's immunity, it compromises the replacement of the body's epithelial tissues.

It is also associated with high infant mortality rates, caused by insufficient consumption of animal foods (meat, eggs and dairy products) and vegetables, which are sources of provitamin A (retinol).

Vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency is very common.

Situations that contribute to vitamin D deficiency are lack of adequate and healthy sun exposure, increased skin pigmentation.

Being over 50 years old, the low consumption of foods rich in vitamin D and the fact of living in cold places where the skin is rarely exposed to the sun.

Vitamin E deficiency

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, reducing the risk of cardiovascular and cerebral diseases such as arteriosclerosis: a degenerative state of thickening of the artery walls that usually causes an increase in blood pressure.

Deficiency of this vitamin causes decreased reflexes and can also lead to visual difficulties, heart disease, cancer, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

Iron deficiency (anemia)

Low consumption of iron-rich foods, such as meat and eggs, causes this deficiency.

Iron is an essential nutrient for the formation of hemoglobin in the blood and the transport of oxygen to the cells. Prolonged iron deficiency in the diet results in a specific deficiency called anemia.

Iodine deficiency

Iodine deficiency causes a number of problems, particularly in the hormonal system and in child development. Is a trace element found in sea salt.

Magnesium deficiency

The first symptom you may have if you run out of magnesium in your body is excessive fatigue.

Because this mineral works by regulating your heart rate, without it you may feel like you have to sit down even after activities you're used to, like climbing stairs.

Another symptom is increased blood pressure. The lack of magnesium reduces the production of nitric oxide, which is the substance responsible for facilitating the passage of blood through the blood vessels, so the effort of pumping the blood is much greater.
