A website has all kinds of content. To buy, to get information, to compare… several reasons can justify your research on the web.

Today, thanks to the CMS, Content Management System, they can more easily create a site and publish content of all kinds.

The CMS is therefore a platform to manage a website in its entirety and provide a publishing chain (the workflow):

  • Both in appearance (the form of the content) :
  • the layout ;
  • the colors;
  • the source;
  • the images;
  • the bonds…
  • That the content itself (the substance of the content) :
  • text creation ;
  • of computer graphics;
  • of the videos;
  • from the podcasts…
  • But also everything that concerns the creation, removal of content or its updating.

To facilitate content management, the CMS must be able to be used simultaneously by several people.

The CMS offers many useful features for content management

In addition to writing texts and integrating images, CMS offer several useful features, such as the possibility of scheduling publication dates.

Access site statistics (number of unique visitors and visits to the particular site), create a menu and categories, display a search bar for Internet users, sort the content by date, etc.

CMS can be used by one or more people. In the second case, it is possible to assign “roles” to all users who will intervene in the website, and thus have control over the different accesses: giving restricted or extended rights.

It is the administration interface of the CMS that allows the management of users and their respective rights.

For example, it is possible to give only one “author” title to a person, giving them only the right to enter a text into the CMS.

Another person can be given the title “publisher”, allowing him/her to modify only the texts written by the author in question.

A third party can be granted full access to publish and thus make the text visible on the site in question.

Good to know: a website is of little interest if it has to fall into oblivion on the Internet when it lands on the results page of a search engine 43ᵉ, especially if it is a professional site aimed at attracting customers or making it known.

Some CMS can help you optimize the SEO of your pages, that is, to have your content appear in the first results of Google, in particular by integrating keywords in the URL of the web and choosing the appropriate HTML tags.

How can I get a CMS?

Most CMS are available in open source, such as WordPress, Joomla, Shopify or Drupal, the most famous.

But you can also use a solution created especially for you by web developers.

How to choose? Open source CMS’s work with a template system: there are several templates available, and you can choose the one that best suits your design.

Although there is a wide range of templates, this means that customization is limited. The “home” CMS needs to be imagined from start to finish.

It gives you a lot of freedom, but its limits are reached when the people who designed the product leave the company with their knowledge.

What is the advantage of CMS?

The main advantage of CMS, apart from the fact that there are many of them available for free, is that they offer the possibility of creating a website without having to master the technique.
