The YouTube Red service is not yet present in Spain and in Latin America only in Mexico, so you may need to find an alternative to play videos in the background.

The YouTube application itself does not allow this, but in this article we propose a method to be able to listen to YouTube videos with the screen off.

NewPipe: Open Source App

The alternative YouTube application NewPipe is not available on the Google Play Store, because it is a free open source app with no advertising, something difficult to find on the Play Store. If you have the F-Droid alternative app store installed, it will automatically take care of NewPipe updates.

In order for F-Droid and its applications to be installed, you must allow applications from unknown sources to be installed. If your device has Android 7 Nougat or lower, you can activate this option by going to Settings> Security and Screen Lock> Unknown Origin.

Now open the F-Droid website in your smartphone browser and download FDroid.apk. After the download, the installation will begin immediately and you will receive a notification when the installation is complete.

After installation, you will be able to start F-Droid immediately. First you will see an empty list, you only have to wait a few seconds for the list of server applications to appear. Then just type NewPipe into the search box. When you see it, click the 'Install' button.

Now click 'Run' to open NewPipe starts and the first thing we'll see is a red search bar at the top and a completely white screen. You just have to find your favorite song.

In the search result, tap the headset symbol in the upper right corner to listen to the song in the background. If the quality is not enough for you, you can change the level to the left. Also, the video won't load, so we'll save data.

Finally, all you have to do is turn off the screen and continue to enjoy your music or video content - enjoy YouTube background playback!
